There was nothing secret about the Skull Crushers, a small gang of Prince George's County teens that authorities have linked to the fatal beating last month of a 56-year-old immigrant. For more than a year, the group kept a public MySpace page packed with photos and boasts of its rivalry with another crew.
All four suspects appear to be mentioned on a site titled "S.C Offical Page." The site bears a graphic reading "Skull Crushers," the gang that a police official has said the defendants are suspected of belonging to.
Yesterday, a county grand jury indicted three of the four youths, one age 14 and two 15-year-olds, accused in the May 28 slaying of Aboubacar Camara near Bladensburg Elementary School. Each was charged as an adult with murder, robbery and other crimes. Prosecutors have until Thursday to decide whether to seek an indictment of the fourth suspect, State's Attorney Glenn F. Ivey said.
"Certainly, the nature of the killing and the age of these defendants have captured the community's attention," Ivey said at a news conference to announce the indictments. "It was a savage beating, there's no question about that."
The grand jury indicted Regina R. Young-Bey and Justin E. McBride, both 15 and both residents of apartment buildings in the 5300 block of Quincy Street in Bladensburg. The jury also indicted Marcus L. Williams, 14, of the 3400 block of 55th Avenue in Bladensburg. The other suspect, Calaisha L. Vaughn, 14, of the 5400 block of 56th Place in the Riverdale area, has been charged by police but not indicted, and she remains under investigation, Ivey said. All are being held without bail.
A Bladensburg police officer has said that county police told his department they think the youths belong to a gang called the Skull Crushers, or the Skull Krusher Crew. The officer, Cpl. Jim Flynn, said county homicide detectives have said the four teens are suspected in other assaults in which victims were robbed this spring and possibly before.
Ivey confirmed yesterday that police and prosecutors are investigating whether the suspects committed other attacks. Ivey declined to comment on any gang affiliation yesterday, saying the investigation is ongoing.
The MySpace page appears to have been created in March 2007; it was last modified in April this year.
Under "Who I'd Like to Meet," the Web site contains a photograph of a young man, captioned "Second O.G My Man Marcus aka M.LDub" -- a nickname that appears to be drawn from Williams's initials, MLW. ("O.G." is slang for "original gangster.") Beneath Williams, there is a picture of "Third O.G Regina G Bay Bay" -- an apparent reference to Regina Young-Bey. Listed under "the members of S.C" are "my twin sis Lay Lay" -- Vaughn's first and middle names are Calaisha Laishae -- and "J Booskie" -- a hint at Justin McBride's name.
About 10 other members are listed along with photos, under nicknames such as "Lil Sleepy," "100 Grand Ace Boogie" and "Lil Krazzie."
The Web page, which does not mention specific acts of violence or illegal activity, is rife with slang and insults directed at another group called the "Knock Out Crew," or K.O.
"K.O dont want it cuz S.C is street certifeid ya hear me . . . S.C are da real goons," reads introductory text on the site. A comment left on the site in 2007 advises members to "keep crushing skullz."
