When Derrick Rose hit the floor April 28 in Game 1 of the Chicago Bulls’ playoff series against Philadelphia, it was clear that he was going to be out a long time and face an intense rehab.

Dr. Brian Cole, who repaired Rose’s torn anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus last weekend, gave a clue of what lies ahead for Rose, estimating that recovery will take eight-to-12 months.

After becoming only the second No. 1 seed to lose to a No. 8 seed in a best-of-seven series, the Spurs’ title window appeared to be closing as quickly as the hairs were disappearing from the top of Manu Ginobili’s head.

Consecutive oh-no performances — Rodriguez walked two batters and gave up a walk-off grand slam in Sunday’s loss to Cincinnati and was yanked with one out after walking the bases loaded in Monday’s victory over San Diego — prompted Manager Davey Johnson to issue a “he’s-still-my-guy” vote of confidence for the reliever who has a 100-mph fastball and apparently no clue where it’s headed.

So the Heat have a tendency to be a bit dramatic, just because their stars were introduced amid smoke and (perhaps) mirrors, and their players occasionally appear at news conferences in what appear to be disguises? Hard to imagine.

Soon, many people in the football community voiced their (unsolicited) opinions about what could cause a man like Junior, who seemed to have everything, to take his own life. Was it chronic traumatic encephalopathy, the degenerative brain disease associated with repeated blows to the head? Depression? Dealing with the emotional difficulties of NFL player transition?

Pankey is the third Maryland player to depart the team in recent weeks. Mychal Parker announced his intention to transfer in April, and then he and guard Terrell Stoglin were suspended for the upcoming season late last month for violating the university’s student-athlete code of conduct. Stoglin then announced his intention to play professionally.

The Wildcats finished 19-14 last season and advanced to the second round of the National Invitation Tournament, where they lost to Washington. Northwestern, which has made four straight NITs but has never advanced to the NCAA tournament, loses senior John Shurna, the Big Ten’s leading scorer in 2011-12 and the 27th player in Big Ten history with at least 2,000 points. However, swingman Drew Crawford, the team’s second-leading scorer at 16.1 points per game and second-leading rebounder at 4.7, will be back

Over an 18-game conference schedule, each ACC basketball team will have just one primary opponent that it will play twice each season. For the Terrapins, that team will be Pittsburgh. Maryland will play the other 12 ACC teams four times over each three-season span, with a home-and-home one season, a home game one season and a road game one season.

Terrell Stoglin and Mychal Parker have been suspended from the men’s basketball team for one year due to a violation of the University of Maryland Student-Athlete Code of Conduct, athletics department officials announced Monday.

Every time they seem to be on the brink of elimination, they fight their way back. They just won’t give up. They continue to find ways to stay alive. That quality has brought them to game seven in Madison Square Garden.

First and foremost I’d like to offer my deepest and sincerest sympathies to Junior’s family. I’ve known Junior for years and have always been a fan of his. I often referred to him as the original Ray Lewis. His charisma and passion for the game was unmatched. It provided the blueprint for 52 of the Ravens.

Six more Americans qualified for the games with strong showings at the AIBA Americas Olympic Qualifying Event in Rio de Janeiro, giving the U.S. the second-largest crop of fighters of any country. Next season, Bennett will finally have a homecoming of sorts.

The Cavaliers will travel to Madison, Wis., on Nov. 28 to play the Badgers as part of the 2012 ACC/Big Ten Challenge, Virginia announced Monday. It will be the first time Tony Bennett has faced Wisconsin since leaving Coach Bo Ryan’s staff in 2003 to join his father at Washington State.
