Does Iran’s nuclear diligence mean diplomacy is futile? Is everything economic growth? [AM Briefing]

“Iran’s slow and steady progress for two decades has demonstrated beyond frantic rhetorical efforts at denial that diplomacy has not only been futile, but has provided Iran political cover and legitimacy while it pursued its nuclear objectives. Even more important, negotiations and the imposition of weak, ineffective sanctions have given Iran time to reach the point where its nuclear activities are broad and deep, and it is close to winning the strategically important race to the nuclear-weapons finish line,” writes AEI’s John Bolton. (Washington Times)

Politico’s Arena asks: Are Evangelist Franklin Graham’s comments about President Obama’s religion a sign that religious voters are questioning Obama’s faith?
If you could take a little from each of the GOP candidates, you could have a perfect candidate. Or... “Of course, you could just as easily have a Frankenstein’s monster with Gingrich’s verbal pomposity, Santorum’s resentful and dour sanctimony, Paul’s conspiratorial nuttiness and the full suite of Romney’s Stepford Republican qualities. It calls to mind Homer Simpson’s scheme to forcibly mate his pets in a burlap sack so as to create ‘a miracle hybrid, with the loyalty of a cat and the cleanliness of a dog,’” writes AEI’s Jonah Goldberg.
A crowdsourcing think tank?

Of the consistent complaints I hear about think tanks and the scholars who occupy them, two have to do with the degree of expertise.

One complaint centers around the phenomenon that experts are too often willing to appear as talking heads on subjects outside their expertise. Some of it is innocent enough. It’s not possible for think tanks to have an expert for every world event or issue, so think tankers extrapolate from the areas in which they genuinely have expertise. Other times, it’s clear that media ambition trumps being a good expert.

Does the United States know who would succeed Assad in Syria? [Ask a Think Tank]

Margaret C. from Albany, NY writes in with this question on Syria and a potential successor to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad:

How can the Obama administration be keen on Syrian President Assad stepping down when they have not once mentioned who would take over? Nearly a year after the massacres and we still have no idea who would follow Assad? How is that possible? Is the intelligence community doing their job in determining who the players are? And if they are, does John McCain not know about it? He hasn’t offered up an alternative to Assad either.
