The use of hormone replacement therapy to treat symptoms of menopause has been among the most controversial and confusing issues in the modern medical world.

Once touted as a potential godsend for women suffering from menopause-related hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness, the therapy was under investigation through the Women’s Health Initiative until July 2002, when the research was abruptly halted because an elevated number of cases of breast cancer was detected in the study participants.

The antibiotic azithromycin, better known as the five-day “Z-pak,” typically does a great, and fast, job of combating such bacterial illnesses as sinus infections and bronchitis. But research published Wednesday evening in the May 17 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine finds that the drug is associated an increased risk of cardiovascular death.

For years, researchers have known that black men have much higher rates of prostate cancer than do white men, and that black men are more than twice as likely to die from the disease as white men.

Now, another troubling racial disparity in prostate cancer has surfaced. For reasons that are unclear, black men also fare more poorly during and after prostate cancer surgery than do white men.

Sleepwalking study: Common in children, less so in adults

When my daughter was little, she was quite the sleepwalker. Until you have a sleepwalker in the family, you have no idea how terrifying it can be. You worry about whether they’ll safely navigate the stairs when they decide to sleep-stumble from the second-floor bedroom where they’re supposed to be, well, sleeping, to the first-floor family room where you’re watching TV. Or that they’ll open a door and wander outside in the middle of the night — and that you might not hear them leave. Or that they’ll pick up a knife in the kitchen or light a burner. . . . Let’s just say it’s hard to sleep with a sleepwalker around.

Two studies released Thursday by the CDC suggest that public-health messages about the dangers of tanning booths and sunburns are lost on a substantial number of Americans.

In one study, the CDC and the National Cancer Institute looked at self-reported sun-exposure data for 5,000 people age 18 to 29 collected through the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) for the years 2000, 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2010. Of those participating in the most recent survey, a whopping 50.1 percent of all adults reported having had at least one sunburn during the preceding 12 months. Among whites, the number was worse: 65.6 percent, or about two-thirds, had been sunburned at least once during that time.

Harry Potter inspires new blood-testing scheme

Remember the scene in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” when Harry writes in what he thinks is a blank book, and Tom Riddle’s responses to his messages appear (magically!) on the page?

Taking a page, so to speak, from J.K. Rowling’s book, a team of chemical engineers at Monash University in Australia has created a new means of testing and documenting people’s blood types that works much like Tom Riddle’s diary.

IUDs are the most effective emergency contraceptive

“Emergency contraception” has almost become synonymous with “morning after pill.” But another type of emergency contraception — the placement of an intrauterine device — is even more effective.

A new review of 42 studies of IUDs for emergency contraception found that IUDs inserted within five days of unprotected intercourse prevented pregnancy more than 999 times out of 1,000 — a failure rate below 0.1 percent.

The kind of cancer that apparently killed 47-year-old musician Adam Yauch is very rare, and its likely causes remain mysterious.

Yauch, who helped make the Beastie Boys band a household name in the mid 1980s, revealed three years ago that he had been diagnosed with salivary parotid gland cancer. Richard Smith, director of the Head and Neck Cancer Program at Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care in Bronx, N.Y., says salivary gland cancers come in “a great variety,” affecting different specific glands within the salivary gland system and carrying differing degrees of lethality.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sent a fascinating little bulletin around to the media Thursday afternoon. The “CDC Statement on Helmets and Tornadoes” is a thoughtfully worded exposition on the merits of donning helmets to protect one’s head during a tornado, a type of storm that has killed 63 people so far this year and claimed more than 500 lives in 2011, according to the National Weather Service.
