Federal offices to open at noon Monday

Due to predicted icy conditions, the government is urging federal employees to stay off roads in the Washington region until 10 a.m. on Monday.

Federal offices will open at noon, the Office of Personnel Management announced Sunday night. Federal workers have the option of taking unscheduled leave or teleworking.

Norton seeks more Inaugural tickets for DC

Norton, a Democrat, said Tuesday that she has written to House and Senate colleagues asking them for their unused tickets.

Red Cross vehicle burns in Bethesda

The Bloodmobile caught fire about 7 p.m. near River Road and Wilson Lane, authorities said.

Pedestrian hit by VRE train

A man was killed Monday night when he was struck by a VRE commuter train south of Woodbridge in Prince William County, authorities said.

A VRE spokesman said the man was struck about 7 or 7:30 p.m. near Cherry Hill Road. The six-car southbound train was carrying about 250 passengers. It runs between Union Station and Fredericksburg.

Pedestrian dies months after being struck

A man who was struck by a car in the District last summer died of his injuries on Monday, the D.C. police said.

They said Maurice Franklin, 62, of Southeast, was struck June 25 while in a crosswalk in the 4700 block of Southern Avenue SE.. Two cars collided nearby and one struck Franklin, police said.

The man was rescued from a blaze in a single-family house in the 1300 block of Generals Highway in the Crownsville area of Anne Arundel County, said Capt. Michael Pfaltzgraff, a county fire department spokesman.

A pedestrian was struck by a car and critically injured Monday night in upper Montgomery County, police said.

Yessenia M. Martinez Rivas, 37, of Lamont Lane in Gaithersburg was struck about 5:30 p.m. in the Gaithersburg area on Muddy Branch Road near Suffield Drive, said Officer Britta Thomas, a police spokeswoman. The site is within a half mile of the woman’s home.

Hurricane Sandy’s heavy rains and winds may have subsided, but coastal flooding is still a concern for parts of the District, Maryland and northern Virginia.

There was flooding reported in Old Town Alexandria and the Washington Channel Tuesday evening, and residents of flood-prone areas are being advised to expect flooding during high tide on Wednesday.

Man shot, then hit by car in Prince William

A man was seriously injured after being first shot and then hit by a car Tuesday night in Prince William County, the county police said.

Police described the shooting, which occurred about 7:30 p.m. at Marumsco Plaza in the Woodbridge area, as not a random event, and said it appeared to involve people acquainted with each other. It apparently followed a fight, police said.

A dog was shot by police after trying to attack an officer Tuesday in the Deanwood section of Northeast Washington, a D.C. police spokesman said.

The incident occurred about 5 p.m. in the 4600 block of Minnesota Avenue NE, near the Deanwood Metro station. Police did not immediately provide information on the dog’s condition.

Police incident in Prince George’s County delays school buses

Dismissals of several Prince George’s County schools were delayed Tuesday afternoon while police dealt with a barricade situation in the area, authorities said.

The barricade in the Landover area of the county began about 2 p.m. and ended peacefully a couple of hours later, authorities said. No shots were fired and one person was taken into custody, police said.
