Elizabeth Warren, the Democratic candidate in Massachusetts for the U.S. Senate, claimed at some points in her professional life to be a very small part Cherokee. The claim, apparently based on family lore, seems to be of dubious authenticity — or, at least, is not yet convincingly authenticated.

Today’s must-read is by Heather Hurlburt, who writes about a potential growing rift between the current radicalized Republican Party and the Pentagon. She identifies five issues — Law of the Sea, energy (see here for more), military trials/detention, Iran, and budget issues — on which Republican positions cause headaches for the military. I wonder whether she would consider missile defense a sixth; there’s also the issue of torture, on which GOP orthodoxy is at odds with national security professionals from the military and other portions of the government.

“I think the president’s statement today is probably the most significant advancing of our cause since the bill-signing,” Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley told me during a meeting in Baltimore, two hours after President Obama announced his public support for same-sex marriage. A poll out just this morning quantifies how significant. If the vote to uphold Maryland’s marriage-equality law were held today, it would pass with 57 percent of the vote. Even more compelling, 55 percent of African Americans said same-sex marriages should have the same rights as other marriages.

Jackie Calmes of the New York Times tells the story today of my all-time favorite presidential photo. The first time I saw it was while walking through the West Wing to a meeting three years ago. A little black boy touching the head of President Obama. The image was so powerful I stopped in my tracks and inquired about the story behind the photo. As Calmes reports, Jacob Philadelphia had a question for the president of the United States.

WASHINGTON — In Democratic primary elections this week, voters in Arkansas, Kentucky and West Virginia swung their support behind the insurgent presidential candidacy of a pair of lawn shears.

The results are the most significant sign yet of President Obama’s lackluster support among rural voters, particularly in Appalachia.

There’s nothing like talking to a state governor or three to be reminded that political dysfunction in Washington isn’t just a depressing game: It really matters, to real people.

The governors are in town for the annual meeting of the National Governors Association, and three of them visited The Post on Wednesday. There were two Democrats (Christine Gregoire of Washington and Jack Markell of Delaware) and one Republican (Dave Heineman of Nebraska), but they were fairly united in their views of Washington, D.C., dynamics.

Kathleen Parker’s column today argues that President Obama is preemptively scolding the Supreme Court for ruling against the health-care law he championed. Not that the Supreme Court has overturned the Affordable Care Act, but when and if and in case they do, Parker says, Obama and his left-of-center media lapdogs are readying a case to put before the public: The court is placing partisan politics above good public policy. It’s a form of extortive lobbying, Parker suggests, calling it “politics at its filthiest and beneath the dignity of the court — and of the White House.”

Is Paul Ryan the leader of a party proud to rally around his banner and his budget plan? Or someone that the party would prefer not to talk about?

If you ask Republican Senate candidates — or at least if you check their websites — it seems that it’s the latter: No one is denouncing Ryan, of course, but on the whole, he’s just not there. Perhaps Ryan doesn’t poll well. Perhaps it’s just that no one wants to be associated with anything in Congress, even a conservative hero.

Don’t be surprised that President Obama lost 40 percent of the vote in West Virginia to a convicted felon currently residing in a Texas prison. Or that he lost similar percentages of the vote last night in Arkansas and Kentucky. A map run by the New York Times in December 2008 pretty much predicted today’s events.

The political universe must be a little off-kilter. I have now seen three instances of folks who should know better or who are usually so supremely careful behaving badly. Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) chose the wrong word. Newark Mayor Cory Booker (D) is now seen as an Obama saboteur. And South Carolina AFL-CIO President Donna Dewitt was just plain dumb.

In an editorial today, The Post excoriated Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett (R) for pandering to the lunatic fringe of his party by keeping the absurd “birther” conspiracy alive. Bennett is threatening to strike the president’s name from the state ballot this fall unless Hawaii coughs up the president’s birth certificate. (Again.) The Post called this “ballot buffoonery.”

Back in 1988, social conservatives rallied to Pat Robertson in Iowa … and in the process of doing so there and elsewhere, wound up taking over the formal structure of the Republican Party. The results? It rapidly became very difficult, and in most states impossible, to win a Republican nomination for anything higher than dog catcher without a perfect pro-life position. And yet the electoral implications beyond nomination politics haven’t been particularly severe. Social conservatives have brought Republicans some issues that have played well in general elections, some that have hurt them and others that appear to have had little effect one way or another.

The massive protests over the weekend in Chicago during the NATO summit have folks wondering if that marked a resurgence of the Occupy Wall Street movement. But I have to tell you, if those demonstrations are any indicator, OWS is going nowhere fast.
