It includes religious imagery and phrases, giving the film a kind of weight that may have the power to move teens in search of depth in their movies. The story is told in flashbacks and flash-forwards, forcing an audience to pay close attention. “Man of Steel” opens on Superman’s home planet of Krypton. Jor-El sends his baby, Kal-El, in a space pod toward Earth as their planet is about to disintegrate, in hopes that he will become someone the earthlings can learn from. General Zod kills Jor-El and vows to trace Kal-El, retrieve the Kryptonian “codex” and get revenge. Cut to the farm where baby Kal-El lands. His adoptive parents urge the boy to keep his emerging powers secret until he discovers his purpose. The adult Clark meets Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane at an Arctic dig where an alien spacecraft has been discovered. Inside it, Clark learns his history. General Zod and his minions land on Earth and threaten to destroy humanity.

Lego figures are getting angrier, according to science

Legos haven't just become astronomically expensive in the past 35 years. Nothing in the film is inappropriate for younger kids, but its slow pacing and nuanced emotions will bore them. Set in Tel Aviv among the Hasidic community, it’s the story of an 18-year-old girl, Shira, an accordion-playing assistant kindergarten teacher. She faces a life-altering choice when her beloved older sister dies during childbirth (not graphic). Her brother-in-law Yochay will likely remarry soon, and may move away. Shira’s mother, desperate to see her grandson grow up nearby, decides that Shira should marry her widowed brother-in-law. Epic (PG). There’s enough visual beauty and wit in this 3-D animated fable to keep kids 6 and older entertained. Still, the film feels occasionally fidget-worthy at one hour and 42 minutes. A strongminded 17-year-old named M.K. comes to live with her estranged dad, Prof. Bomba, after the apparent (implied, not discussed) death of her mom. Kind but absentminded, Bomba is obsessed with his research. He is convinced that tiny people live in the woods. The people there are Leafmen. They and all the lesser forest creatures around them have a whole civilization. Queen Tara and her realm are threatened by Mandrake, evil leader of the Boggans, who want to destroy the forest. Leafmen warriors fly on armored hummingbirds to fight the Boggans. M.K. gets caught in the middle of a battle. She shrinks to Leafmen size and is befriended by Queen Tara and the brave Ronin.
<a No alarms going off at ungodly hours. No hectoring about homework. No imposed bedtimes.

But mostly I’m looking forward to the return of “the question.”

This summer mealtime tradition was started by my son Andrew. At age 8 or 9, he had correctly figured out that during summer we spent more time around the breakfast or dinner table. Meals were often eaten on the screened-in back porch, which invited lingering conversation. Even as a young child, Andrew was never one to put up with idle chatter. Conversation, he seemed to know innately, should lead to greater understanding of people, of nature, of the world.

What’s keeping Baby up?

Although my son’s cold left two weeks ago, his teeth still seem to hurt even with Tylenol and numbing gels.
