The future of innovation is in learning how to fail.

That may sound counter-intuitive, but if you look at several of the recent trends in innovation — everything from rapid prototyping to the common Internet practice of releasing products early in beta — they are all about making rapid, iterative adjustments that uncover tiny failures and then correcting them more quickly than one’s competitors. Small failures are okay, as long as they lead to future success. Consider the "pivot" — surely one of the most over-used terms of the current Internet zeitgeist. How can it be anything other than a tacit admission of failure and an explicit promise to do something better in the future?

There was a bit of a dust-up last week over a TED talk — a dust-up that has carried well into this week.

The talk was delivered by Seattle venture capitalist Nick Hanauer and ran contrary to the conventional wisdom/political talking point (depending on how you want to look at it) that the rich are “job creators.”

Update 2:52 p.m. : According to NASA spokesman Allard Beutel, the plan is, if SpaceX gets the go-ahead, the International Space Station is expected to use the robotic arm to retrieve the Dragon capsule at a little after 8 a.m. ET. Then the capsule is expected to attach to the station at around 11:05 a.m. Allard stressed that all times were approximate and dependent on a series of go/no go calls. Beutel provided the information on a call Thursday.

If you’re into innovation, you’ve probably come across a piece in the Wall Street Journal headlined, “You call that innovation?”

In it, the Journal’s Leslie Kwoh explores the death of “innovation” as a buzzword, figuratively digging its burial plot alongisde “synergy” and “optimization” — words you don’t want to be caught dead saying in a meeting, assuming you want to be taken seriously.

Vallejo, California is getting more than just a face-lift.

The city, as the Post’s Ariana Eunjung Cha reports, is implementing new, and in some cases unprecedented, policies in order to reverse a severe budget shortfall, more efficiently fight crime, and otherwise clean up the city.

DARPA, the highly secretive Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, is partnering with TechShop to continue work on iFab, a turn-on-a-dime factory that would allow the government to quickly and seamlessly create parts and products as needed.

Jonathan Ive, Apple’s senior vice president of industrial design, was knighted Wednesday by the princess royal, according to the BBC. Ive is behind the sleek all-in-one packaging unique to Apple’s products, including the iPod, iPad, iPhone, iMac and just about every other iProduct. His designs are among the most influential in the history of technology to date.

It is projected that there will be more than 10 billion mobile devices in use around the world by 2016, and a new report from Brookings Institution’s Darrell West outlines just how powerful mobile devices could be in the battle to bring down health care costs while simultaneously improving and expanding care.

Facebook’s eagerly anticipated IPO, which turned Mark Zuckerberg into a billionaire and a select group of Silicon Valley insiders into millionaires, has had a decidedly rocky debut, to say the least. Shares, which priced at $38 and advanced as high as $42 on the first day of trading, have tumbled out of the gate amidst a long list of potential problems: “embarrassing” glitches on the Nasdaq, investment bankers who priced the deal too high, and concerns from advertisers about Facebook's core business. While Facebook may have been “the last great company of the desktop age,” at $38, it was overvalued for a new mobile age where consumers use the site via smart phones rather than desktops or laptops.

The SpaceX lanch was delayed yet again, this time at the last minute. The launch was aborted at the end of the countdown early Saturday morning, according to the Associated Press, even catching NASA’s seasoned commenter George Diller by surprise:
