Wednesday: This city doesn’t bat an eye when big-name techno DJs visit Glow or underground house selectors stop by U Street Music Hall, but it’s hard not to be impressed by the potential of Red Bull’s Thre3Style competition. Eight of D.C.’s party-rocking DJs deliver a 15-minute set that must hopscotch between three genres, a rule that means musical knowledge is as important as brute turntable skills. Contestants battling for a trip to the competition’s Miami finals include DJ Alizay (the Park at 14th), DJ Philpz (Shadow Room, Eden), KC (Fatback) and Geometrix (Ultrabar, Beat Refinery). And, after all is said and done, Mayer Hawthorne — a.k.a. DJ Haircut — delivers the headlining set at Howard Theatre.

Project 4 Gallery’s current exhibition, a visually striking installation by sculptor Foon Sham, does more than spotlight the Chinese-born artist’s recent art. It’s also a celebration of work he made years ago.

Tonight brings the much-anticipated opening of Mike Isabella’s second restaurant, the Day of the Dead-themed Bandolero, in Georgetown.

While Bandolero’s site bills it as a "taco-centric, margarita-laden" Mexican restaurant, expect plenty of refined small plates, Isabella’s specialty since his Zaytinya days. The restaurant opens at 4 p.m.; most of the reservations appear to have been snapped up, but the truly patient could always wait out the crowds for a couple seats at the bar.

That’s when two pop-up type events will spotlight South Asian cuisine that rarely finds it way onto menus in Washington. And you can finally venture outside the saag paneer/chickpea chole/chicken tikka box to try dishes that will challenge what you think you know about South Asian cuisine. (Chicken tikka? A British creation, anyway.)
