Without dismissing politics entirely, I would observe that the Roman Catholic Church has endured for millennia partly because it can subordinate ideological issues to make paramount the survival of the church. Pope Benedict XVI, I believe, announced his retirement from the papacy for the good of Catholicism.

Anthony M. Witness their rejection to the Affordable Care Act. Health care for all had been a celebrated cause of America’s Catholic bishops since the last century. But instead they departed from nearly a hundred years of Catholic advocacy, to officially oppose Obamacare. Their rejection was partly based on nit-picking Obama’s executive order prohibiting federal funding of abortions. Thankfully, key Catholic organization engaged in health care refused to follow the bishops in denying the greater good in search of perfection. Will this happen again as Washington prepares legislation on comprehensive immigration reform?

Are institutions Catholic enough?

The number of agencies calling themselves big-C “Catholic” will shrink. That is the inevitable result of De Caritate Ministranda , delivered December 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI as a motu proprio (a decree from the pope himself). As analyzed by John L. My claim that the expenditures were “wrong” has nothing to do with moral and doctrinal opinions on same-sex marriage, abortion, contraception, etc. The paid political propagandizing was wrong because it contradicts the original organizational purpose of the Knights of Columbus. We were founded in New Haven, Conn., in 1881 to provide spiritual and material brotherhood to Catholic men. The chasm separating the original vision from the current drift, I contend, is unhealthy to the Knights of Columbus future.

Anthony M. The overwhelming evidence that the Latino community played a decisive role in reelecting President Obama was predicted before the election in the pages of “Blessing La Política.” More importantly, the book traces with social science patience why more than 75 percent identification with the Democrats is not a passing phenomenon among Latino Catholics.

Anthony M. Lynn for child endangerment? Legally, one can expect an appeal in order to prevent the former clergy secretary for the Philadelphia Archdiocese from serving the maximum sentence of seven years in jail. The court finding substantiates Lynn’s culpable responsibility for knowing that such abuse was likely to occur, but endangering children nonetheless by assigning abusers to what we Catholics call “near occasions of sin.”

Anthony M. Yet Easter has been more profaned and commercialized than Christmas. With bunnies, decorated eggs, jelly beans and songs about bonnets, there is scarcely mention in common culture of Christ’s Resurrection from the dead, let alone sales of items commemorating the same. Despite the proliferation of snowmen and red-cheeked Santas at Christmas, the season features the Child Jesus, with Christmas carols about the stable and angels from on high. Where in popular culture does the Easter bunny share space with the Risen Savior?

Anthony M.
