John Huston’s controversial World War II documentary about soldiers suffering from combat stress has been restored by the National Archives and put online to mark Memorial Day.

The film, “Let There Be Light,” was supressed by the Army and not shown to the public until 1980. The restoration has repaired the soundtrack, allowing viewers to hear once-inaudible conversations between the soldiers and the Army doctors treating them for what was then called shell shock and is now known as post-traumatic stress disorder.

Peter Van Buren, a foreign service officer who wrote an unflattering book about his year leading reconstruction teams in Iraq, has received the support of the American Civil Liberties Union in his effort to keep his job.

President Obama issued a directive Wednesday that encourages federal agencies to make their Web sites and documents accessible on mobile platforms.

In fact, by the time the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee session concluded, skeptical senators on both sides of the aisle had painted Director Mark Sullivan as a good administrator but one hopelessly naive about what his agents do away from home.

What scandal? — Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan put in an entertaining performance while testifying before Congress about his agency’s prostitution scandal, according to our colleague Dana Milbank. His blithe denials “had the effect of elevating the scandal category from embarrassment to possible coverup.”

Many of Obama’s key financial supporters are gay--including finance director Rufus Gifford and Democratic National Committee treasurer Andrew Tobias--and the campaign has regularly held fundraisers focused on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender donors.

The last three times control of the House has changed hands, the winning party has run on some form of public, cohesive agenda that could be embraced by incumbents and challengers alike. But as House Democrats mount an uphill climb to recapture the chamber this November, it’s not clear whether they plan to follow that model.

On the other side, there’s, well, exactly the same thing.

So perhaps it is not surprising that on the important social issues that came before the Supreme Court this term, Maryland’s Democratic Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler and Virginia Republican Ken Cuccinelli II took opposite paths.

The ambiguities, contradictions and unaddressed consequences in federal statutes keep the court in business. And in interpreting Congress’s work, justices employ all manner of tools, including other statutes, the court’s own precedents and sometimes a good dictionary.

That’s one reason why no rational strategy, other than deterrence, has ever been developed to justify them. Events in the past 10 days make my case.
