In January of 2012, political and religious conservatives declared a “war on religion” largely in response to the ruling from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services requiring that birth-control be supported in employee health plans, even in the case of some religious employers. Now that the Obama administration has announced a compromise that states if employers object to birth control on religious groups, provision can made for women to seek the coverage directly from their insurance companies, is the ‘war on religion’ over?

This morning, President Obama announced what was called an “accommodation” on the rule relating to access to insurance coverage for birth control. While I was glad that the administration did not cave completely to the demands of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), the reality is that this compromise relies on insurance companies to do the right thing, and gives victory #1 to the bishops on their “religious liberty” shopping list.

In China, private colleges, universities multiply to meet higher-education demand

Langfang, China --- Hundreds of private colleges and universities have opened in China in the past decade in response to soaring demand for higher education in the world’s most populous nation.

The growing private sector fills a niche in a market long dominated by public universities. The private schools offer millions of students a no-frills education and a better shot at a paycheck after graduation as China continues its quest to gain influence in the world economy.

How’s this for keeping college affordable: Excelsior College just rolled out a program that guarantees a bachelor’s degree for $10,000.

Excelsior is a nonprofit college in Albany that specializes in helping mid-career adults finish their studies. The school consolidates college credits in the same way a debt-relief service consolidates bills, helping returning students clean up their transcripts and finish their degrees.

Catholic University may hold the distinction of being the first educational institution in Washington to hold an earthquake drill.

Tuesday morning at 11:15, denizens of Catholic in Northeast Washington put down what they were doing, scuttled under desks and held on tight. It was a test of earthquake etiquette that nearly everyone in Washington failed last August, when the city was visited by an actual earthquake.

Your body in a vacuum, and the philosophy of chemistry

What we learned from sci-fi movies: Don’t take your helmet off in outer space. Eyeballs freeze. Blood boils. Gore spurts into the vacuum like pizza sauce splattering around a Papa John’s kitchen.

As it turns out, this is a Hollywood exaggeration. (We’re shocked.) In real life, exposure to a vacuum would be a painful fate but much less gooey. In a recent video post, Discover magazine blogger Phil Plait explains what would really happen. First, the good news: Your blood won’t boil. On Earth, liquids boil at a lower temperature when there’s less atmospheric pressure; outer space is a vacuum, with no pressure at all; hence the blood boiling idea. But your blood is locked up in a closed circulatory system, so it’s protected from the elements (or lack thereof). Your body’s open circuits are a different matter. “You will erupt out all of the air in your lungs, it will come out of your mouth. All of the air in your intestines will find a different escape route,” Plait says.

Makers of genetically modified seeds say more farmers evading EPA rules

Monsanto Co. and other seedmakers reported a threefold increase last year in U.S. farmers caught violating rules intended to stop insects from developing resistance to genetically modified corn.

The rules affect farmers planting seeds modified to produce a toxin derived from Bacillus thuringiensis, or Bt, a natural insecticide. The Environmental Protection Agency requires those growers to also plant an adjacent area — a so-called refuge — of non-Bt corn so that bugs feed on both types of corn and don’t become immune to the toxin.

Getting a dental implant from a dental school can save you money

Talk about sticker shock.

I’d just learned what it was going to cost to finish the work on a dental implant I had begun six months earlier, in May 2010. Back then, my periodontist had surgically placed a screwlike titanium post within the bone socket below my missing tooth. I had paid $1,750 out of pocket to have the device implanted, since my insurance wouldn’t cover it. I’d assumed that this was going to be the most expensive part of the procedure.

For education, President Obama hopes to increase spending to $69.8 billion in 2013, which is 2.5 percent more than the current budget of $68.1 billion.

Obama’s budget proposal Monday for the next fiscal year seeks level funding or slight increases for several education programs, including competitive grants that reward public education reforms and innovation. And he wants to spend $14 billion on one-time “strategic investment” in key areas, including synchronizing education with labor needs, improving teacher quality and making college more affordable.

Within a very short period of time, our discussions become deeply personal and there’s an evolution that moves from This is how I lead to This is who I am to These are the people I love.

By this stage of the GOP race, when the votes start tumbling in and the lesser players start tumbling out, we have read most of what there is to know about the six men—and they are indeed now all men—who aim to become the Republican nominee. We’ve read about their political successes and failures. We’ve learned about their families and their backgrounds. We know the quirky tidbits of their lives: Rick Santorum briefly lobbied for the World Wrestling Federation. Ron Paul doesn’t wear his seat belt. Newt Gingrich has an odd fascination with zoos.

You’ve probably never heard of Pattie Sellers. But Warren Buffett has. And so have Sheryl Sandberg, Oprah Winfrey and Indra Nooyi.

It’s an enviable list, really.

They’re among the many who’ve joined Sellers at the Most Powerful Women summit. This year, from a slightly raised stage, she looks out once more across table upon table of some of the world’s most prominent female executives, artists and philanthropists. It’s the opening dinner of Fortune magazine’s annual summit on a surprisingly chilly October evening on the Southern California coastline. The 400-plus guests sit under a big, white tent on a cliff perched over the gray, choppy Pacific. Inside, the Ritz-Carlton has pulled off something that looks a lot like prom: purple sequined tablecloths and settings of pink roses illuminated by purple and pink floodlights.

A week after Google Chairman Eric Schmidt testified before the Senate Judiciary antitrust committee, he was back in California at the company’s headquarters in Mountain View. There on September 29, Schmidt — who until this April had served as the company’s longtime CEO — sat down with Washington Post On Leadership editor Lillian Cunningham and reflected on his first time testifying before Congress, what Washington understands and doesn’t understand about regulating technology, and where the connections and disconnects are between the Hill and the Valley.

It is Cyber Friday and — ho-ho-ho — Santa is making his rounds.

You may know all about Cyber Monday, which comes right after Thanksgiving weekend, when online hawkers try to sell a lot of stuff by offering free shipping. Cyber Friday comes four days later. That’s when a billion and one packages begin getting delivered.

The Occupy movement is largely an impromptu one, and its camps in McPherson Square and nationwide are dotted with handmade signs, bearing information both political and practical. But this is the age of computer design, when slick images are easily produced and generally accepted. As the online gallery at occuprint.org reveals, the Occupy movement has more than a few skilled graphic designers in its informal ranks.

The geologist who conceived it called it the poor man’s space program. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) fumed that it was a waste of taxpayer dollars. Meteorite hunter Ralph Harvey simply calls it work.

For the 35th year, the United States is mounting its annual campaign to gather space rocks from the wind-hammered icefields of Antarctica.
