O’Malley tries to rally support for gas tax increase

Since January, when Gov. Martin O’Malley proposed increasing Maryland’s gas tax, prices at pumps statewide have shot up more than 40 cents per gallon. Nationally, rising gas prices have dragged down President Obama’s approval rating. And some longtime proponents of a gas-tax increase in Maryland have distanced themselves from O’Malley’s plan, saying it should be shelved until gas prices fall.

Opponents of same-sex marriage on Wednesday announced the launch of a widely expected petition drive, vowing to derail Maryland’s new gay nuptials law at the ballot box in November.

“The General Assembly and the governor do not have the final word on marriage in Maryland,” said Derek McCoy, executive director of the Maryland Marriage Alliance, the group leading the petition effort. “The people do.”

The good doctor’s response is a model of nuance and reason, weighing the desires of drivers and the neighborhoods they drive through — recommended reading. Incidentally, this driver recently received his first speeding camera ticket, for $125, and while not pleased about it, he will now be driving more carefully down the 100 block of Florida Avenue NW in the future.
