Sinkhole snarls traffic in downtown D.C. on Wednesday

As expected, a sinkhole in downtown Washington snarled traffic during Wednesday morning's rush hour.

Several streets around the site at the intersection of 14th and F streets in Northwest Washington have been blocked since Tuesday as crews work to repair the hole.

Henderson shakes up two D.C. schools

More than 100 teachers and staff at two D.C. schools learned this week that they must reapply for their jobs under a shake-up by Chancellor Kaya Henderson.

Cardozo High and Patterson Elementary schools have both struggled for years with low test scores. The chancellor has the power to “reconstitute” such schools in an effort to spur improvement.

Federal contract employees at some of the nation’s best-known landmarks walked off their jobs Tuesday during a day of protests over low wages and lack of benefits.

The day-long strike was organized by a group called Good Jobs Nation on behalf of the workers who serve the food and run the cash registers at museums and offices in the heart of the federal city. Some workers said they were being paid less than the federal minimum wage of $7.25, and some said they were working in a government building despite being in the country illegally.

Fairfax Sheriff Stan Barry announces retirement

Fairfax County Sheriff Stan Barry said Tuesday that he will retire in July, ending a career of more than three decades with the office that runs the jail and provides courthouse security.

Barry, a Democrat who has won election four times, cited personal reasons for stepping down. He oversees a staff of more than 600 and was first elected in 1999 after a 19-year career with the office. He became a deputy at 21.
