That’s easy enough to remember. Revel, the new $2.4 billion destination on Atlantic City’s boardwalk, is a resort-not-a-casino just as it’s a resort-not-a-nightclub or a resort-not-a parking-garage.

We’d seen the stadium under construction last year, looking as though an enormous space ship had landed near Miami’s famed Calle Ocho neighborhood, home to Cuban coffee bars, tropical fruit markets and Spanish-only stores and restaurants. Anxious to see the finished $515 million product, we watched the Yankees play the Marlins in a preseason game last month.

For the limited-edition “Landmarks and Legends,” I would drive the entire state of Delaware, from bottom to top. I would leap over fences and stumble through darkness illuminated only by automobile headlights. I would walk beneath a halo of vultures. Obtaining this book was my primary mission and my sole reason for, well, being in Delaware.

In Pennsylvania Dutch country, the distelfink — a goldfinch that eats thistle seeds and builds thistledown nests — is a good-luck bird. It also symbolizes smooth sailing and tranquility and is often found on colorful hex signs, a form of Pennsylvania Dutch folk art commonly found painted on barns in Berks County, where I was born.

Today the family decided to take a closer look. “We peeked inside and saw the theater,” said his wife, Carolyn Maloney. “We are absolutely coming back. It was beautiful.”

If there’s a hotel in Washington that more completely lives up to its name than Hotel Rouge, I can’t think of it. Part of the Kimpton chain, the Rouge, which opened in 2001 and underwent a renovation last year, strikes a playful, sexy tone that’s refreshingly out of character with its surroundings. While nearby Scott Circle plays host to the stern statues of Gen. Winfield Scott, statesman Daniel Webster and physician Samuel Hahnemann, a line of Venuses flanks the front of Rouge like so many showgirls, promising that a break from all the seriousness of the capital resides inside.

At 5:30 p.m. on a Saturday in late February, the warmly elegant lounge in this grande dame of a hotel in Cape May, N.J., is packed to the gills. And more folks are flocking in nonstop. My husband and I are standing near the massive bar, forlorn: It’s a big, big room with lots of seating, but we can’t find two places together. Boo.
