The announcements, by actors Jim Parsons and Kristin Chenoweth, also revealed that Shakespeare Theatre Company will receive the special Tony Award that is given each year to an outstanding regional theater company. The Pulitzer Prize-winning “Clybourne Park,” which had a crucial early run at Woolly Mammoth Theatre, received four nominations, including one for best new play. And a revival of Terrence McNally’s “Master Class,” which also began at the Kennedy Center, received a nomination for best play revival.

Olney Theatre Center’s Jim Petosa knows that for sure. He has led the upper-Montgomery County landmark since 1994 and directed shows there well before that. Until the theater’s financial travails of the past three years, he was able to diversify programming in fairly remarkable ways for a suburban venue that began life as a summer theater in 1938.

“That’s so lame,” she says. “That’s the whole ‘D.C. wants to be New York’ thing.”

But they do not need playwrights. Libraries are lousy with scripts, many conveniently free from copyright. These are called “classics” or “revivals,” although Harry Bagdasian, who ran the District’s New Playwrights Theatrefrom 1972 to 1984, has a more pungent term: “used plays.”
