Performances of this still-spectacular work are being staged all over the world this month, and one of the most striking may have been Sunday evening’s performance by the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, in the Atrium of the National Gallery of Art’s East Building. With its slashing angles, kinetic spaces and eruptive heights, the Atrium echoes “Rite’s” own brash and fearless modernism — and from that perspective, at least, it’s hard to imagine a more perfect setting.

Marine Chamber Orchestra takes some time to warm up

The U.S. Marine Chamber Orchestra seemed to gather strength and confidence as it worked its way through a program of Stravinsky, Prokofiev and Bizet at the Schlesinger Concert Hall on Sunday.

You would think that the Stravinsky Octet for Winds would be right up its alley but, instead of sharply honed incisiveness and a sense of alacrity, the musicians offered a reading with softened edges — nimble enough but without a feeling that they were sitting on the edges of their seats waiting to attack the next entrance. For some reason, the conductor, Maj. Jason Fertig, chose to conduct this without a baton, and the resulting generality in his beat was what his forces gave back to him.

Ray Manzarek, keyboardist and founding member of The Doors, dies at 74

Ray Manzarek, who studied economics in college but cherished music and met with Jim Morrison on a California beach one fateful day in 1965 to help create the Doors, died May 20 at a clinic in Rosenheim, Germany.
