There’s a map of China in the Sackler lobby. It won’t strike you as a map if you look at it. It’s a structure made of big, dark, wooden beams pinned together with smaller wooden posts, looping around a central area at improbable, disjointed angles, like something a giant child might build with a set of Tinkertoys.

‘2.46 and Thereafter’: Japan’s triple disaster through artists’ eyes

The neon sign in the window of the Eighth Street NW art gallery is doubly ironic. “Atomic Power is the Energy of the Future,” it reads, in Japanese.

The first irony is that the wording of artist Masaharu Futoyu’s piece is taken from a sign in Futaba, a town that’s been off limits since the partial meltdown last spring at the nearby Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. The second is that the artwork, which gently questions the Japanese power company TEPCO, is on display at the PEPCO Edison Place Gallery.

Artisphere’s ‘Frida Kahlo: Her Photos’ offers intimate look at the artist

One of the best-known artists of the 20th century, Frida Kahlo produced art that was incessantly self-reflecting — 55 of her 143 known paintings were self-portraits. Her rocky years with Diego Rivera, whom she married twice, her near-fatal bus accident and the pain she lived with most of her life are reflected in her colorful, often surreal works, a pinnacle of Mexican art.

Poets have long taken inspiration from art.

But in the current show at the University of Maryland University College Arts Program Gallery, the process is reversed.

The 18 artists from 13 countries represented in “The Poetics of Water” devised their work from poems. Two Washington poets were involved in the program, Kim Roberts and Dan Vera. They in turn coaxed poems out of separate workshops involving senior citizens and at-risk African American boys.

There are two standout works by iona rozeal brown in the Corcoran Gallery of Art’s 30 Americans exhibition, devoted to the work of African American artists. On first glance, they look like 18th- or 19th-century Japanese images, flat, colorful and erotic, with figures that have the theatrical exaggeration of Kabuki actors. But examine them more closely and a volatile tension emerges between their decorative surface and their provocative treatment of identity and race. In one image, the subject is wearing blackface makeup. In the other, a sexually available, ample and buxom Asian woman with very dark skin looks as if she just emerged from the corner nail and wig shop.

Two new exhibitions show how Andy Warhol defined — and denied — his genius

How smart was Andy Warhol? Smarter than he looked, smarter than he claimed to be, and smart enough to remain fascinating, frustrating and even infuriating almost a quarter-century after his death.

“Warhol: Headlines,” which opens at the National Gallery of Art on Sunday, is the museum’s first major exhibition devoted to the artist. It leaves no doubt about the curator’s point of view: Warhol was no irony-soaked provocateur mindlessly importing pop pizzazz into the sanctums of high art for pure shock value. He was strategic, intelligent and brilliantly adept at analyzing and indicting the world we live in today, a world he seemed to both predict and forge through games of representation we now know by the encompassing shorthand: Warholian.

Jamming an ambitious new art festival into the Skyline Hotel, an outpost of mid-century modern cool in Southwest D.C., was never going to be easy. Designed by the Miami architect Morris Lapidus in the early 1960s, the Skyline has small rooms, low ceilings, narrow hallways and conference space better scaled to a philately convention or mahjong tournament than a major art fair. But it has buzz and it’s owned by the Rubell family, who have emerged as major players in the Washington contemporary art scene.

A Connecticut teenager says workers at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York didn’t believe him when he pointed out a mistake in a map on display showing the Byzantine Empire in the 6th century.

But 13-year-old Benjamin Lerman Coady of West Hartford knew he was right. The seventh-grader had just studied the empire in school before going to the museum last summer.

John L. Gray, the founding president of the Autry National Center of the American West, has been selected by the Smithsonian Institution to lead the National Museum of American History.

The choice indicates the Smithsonian’s commitment to tell more American stories as part of its strategic plan. The Smithsonian has often been criticized for not including in-depth histories of events and people from the West, outside of the National Museum of the American Indian.

The Metropolitan Museum’s annual Costume Institute Gala may be the world’s greatest red carpet: It’s where celebrities dare to take risks in front of sartorial tastemakers such as Vogue editor Anna Wintour, and a host of fashion designers and models.
The young girl growing up in a harem in Morocco is sitting alone in an abandoned house surrounded by olive trees. For one month, the girl will speak to no one and be spoken to by no one. This is her punishment for “stepping outside the permissible space” and rebelling against rules that give her brothers more freedom.

ISTANBUL — Orhan Pamuk’s Museum of Innocence, which opened here last weekend, is an unprecedented project for a writer: the first museum in the world based on an eponymous work of fiction. “The idea came to me almost 15 years ago to set an imaginary story in a real house in Istanbul. I conceived of the book and the museum together,” Pamuk said.

The best museum exhibits mix delight, education and provocation so subtly that the visitor isn’t aware where one bleeds into another. The National Building Museum’s new long-term display, “House & Home,” explores a subject so wide and so fundamental to American life that it inevitably touches the pleasure buttons of nostalgia.

When you’re one of the world’s most famous museums taking possession of the world’s most famous spaceship, the first question is also the biggest: how to display it.

For Valerie Neal, curator of human spaceflight at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, the answer was simple: Present the space shuttle as if it had just landed, gear down, payload doors closed, underbelly scorched.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — On Interstate 540 near Bentonville, a billboard shows what appears to be a wild circus costume, or an outlandish party dress for someone who stands about eight feet tall. It is a Soundsuit, a work by the contemporary African American artist Nick Cave, famous for his distinctive fabric sculptures covered in strange geegaws and decorative exotica.

The new memorial to Martin Luther King Jr. turns out to be a relatively modest affair. A stoplight on Independence Avenue SW announces the entrance, where a fan-shaped entry court leads to a 30-foot-high portal of carved stone. The memorial faces inward, away from the Mall, with planted earthen berms and trees obscuring it from many angles.
