Galaxy Note: Big screen browsing, but is it practical?

There’s a part of me that loves the Galaxy Note.

At 5.3-inches, the screen on this thing is beautiful. Videos on this Samsung screen look great — no squinting — and now easier-to-read Web pages load quickly on the 4G network. And its screen real estate actually makes me think that I can type with my thumbs without a significantly lower danger of an auto-correct misstep.

Google and Yahoo are among companies that are expanding the use of a strategy to fight patent suits that shuns the courtroom in favor of government reviews.

The battlefield opened last year when the two Internet giants, hit with a lawsuit demanding royalties by Paul G. Allen’s Interval Licensing, got the case put on hold after asking the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to scrutinize the patents’ validity. Google took the same approach against Oracle, and TiVo is challenging a Microsoft case in a similar fashion.

In a letter to CEO Larry Page, the state attorneys general said the plan to begin sharing consumer data across Google’s services on March 1 “forces these consumers to allow information across all of these products to be shared, without giving them the proper ability to opt out.”

Apple released a 156-company list of the companies that make up its supply chain on Friday. Many of the companies on the list were already identified as Apple suppliers, thanks to gadgets blogs that post “teardowns” that expose the guts of Apple products, but this is the first time the firm has disclosed that information.

Ever since I became an academic six years ago, I have been one of the biggest critics of U.S. competitiveness policies. I documented, for example, that we had our data wrong when it came to India and China’s advantages in engineering education and R&D, that we didn’t understand how to build innovation centers, and that our assumptions about entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship were wrong. I have been particularly vocal about America’s flawed immigration policies. I quantified the amazing contribution that skilled immigrants make in the technology industry and raised the alarm about the reverse brain drain that is in progress. I testified, assertively, to Congress, and have been badgering our political leaders to act on these important issues.

Sony has been a bit slow to get into the tablet game, but its first entry into the space — the unusually shaped, Android-powered Tablet S — has generated a lot of curiosity.

The excitement isn’t just about design, either. The company is one of the few with a footprint and ecosystem big enough to take on the Apple iPad.

Galaxy Tab 10.1 Review: The best Android has to offer

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is available in stores across the country today, and it seems the company has offered the best Android tablet on the market.

The hardware on the tablet is great; it’s sleek and light with a great screen and is easily the best Android tablet I’ve played with so far. But what I — and non-Apple manufacturers, apparently — keep running up against is the iPad question. With the number of applications designed for tablets on Android, there’s just no comparison.

Overall, Research in Motion’s PlayBook is a tablet that’s just not living up to its potential. With solid hardware and great portability, the PlayBook’s lack of really useful apps is all the more disappointing. Here’s a breakdown of what the tablet has to offer:

HTC Flyer Review: Solid, but pricey

The HTC Flyer, aka, the tablet with a pen, is a surprisingly fun and easy-to-use tablet. While the word “stylus” may conjure images of brick-sized PDAs, the Flyer’s stylus gives the device a little oomph that distinguishes it from the never-ending parade of Android tablets flooding the market.
And, to be fair, HTC doesn’t call it a stylus — it’s a “magic pen.”

A week after Apple’s iPad 2 arrived in stores and I got my first look at the tablet (in the form of a 3G model loaned by Apple PR), I’ve had time to dig deeper into this device. Here are some further thoughts on this thing’s features.

Droid RAZR review: What you should know

.

The Droid RAZR is one of those rare phones that qualifies as a leap forward in hardware design and engineering. Sure, other handsets have higher-resolution displays and faster processors, but only the Droid RAZR squeezes a full set of competitive state-of-the-art specs and an LTE radio into a body just .28-inches thick — a profile thinner than any other modern smartphone available. Even more remarkably, the RAZR has a bigger battery than the Droid Bionic inside its ultraslim case. In other words, it’s the best phone Motorola’s ever put together, at least on paper. How does it hold up in the real world — and is it worth getting now instead of waiting for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, which was announced on the same day and features Android 4.0? Read on to find out.

Firing up Nintendo’s latest edition to the Zelda series, “The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword,” is like stepping into a daydream. The visuals are gorgeous, whether you’re soaring through the sky or fighting off enemies with your trusty sword. The game has many classic elements — you get to play, again, as the stalwart Link — but doesn’t feel dated, only familiar.

Playing through “Uncharted 3” is like stepping into an Indiana Jones movie, something Sony has not failed to note with its spots starring Harrison Ford.

In terms of the game itself, there are no real surprises here for fans of the franchise: Naughty Dog has stuck to its successful formula of sharp wit, lush graphics and tons of action for this latest installment.

Review roundup: ‘Arkham City’ expands in-game world

Untie the bedsheet cape and take off the homemade mask — you don’t need them to feel like a superhero anymore. Instead, you can fire up “Batman: Arkham City” and put yourself in Batman’s boots.

The gameplay in Rocksteady’s latest sequel to its 2009 hit “Batman: Arkham Asylum” expands the setting offered up in that game and takes it outside. That means more opportunities to swoop, perch and brood atop Gotham City’s iconic skyline. The new game takes place in a Gotham City where the mayor has decided to cede the slums over to criminals and wall off several city blocks as a high-security prison.

Social media’s role in politics

You’ve read how Facebook and Twitter fueled the Arab Spring uprising. You are watching the videos coming out of Syria on Facebook.
